Brown Mason is largely forgotten today, save for aficionados of pulp magazines.
His great contribution to the genre of adventure fiction is his five story
series about Wandering Smith. Isaiah Ezekiel, “Wandering” Smith can usually be
found at Pere Guerrin’s , a rough hang out in New Orleans. His job is to help
anyone “who wants to go after something unusual in a strange place”.
The Golden Anaconda, was first published in 1916, and puts forward many
of the politically incorrect conceptions of the time. The attitude towards
indigenous peoples can be offensive. Keep in mind that this was written nearly
a hundred years ago, before World War I, before women had the right to vote,
and many veterans of the Civil War were still alive. I would encourage parents
to have a talk with their children about how universal civil rights and the
attitudes toward women has changed during the past 100 years, and instead of
finding offense, use stories such as todays to mark our progress in better
respecting and understanding one another.
