The Courtship of Miles Standish is satisfying on many levels. First, it was written in 1858 and gives us a view of the land, trees, rivers, and forests that this bountiful land once so graciously offered, and we so ungraciously polluted, denuded, and deforested. Second, it tells one of most important stories of America’s founding: that of Plymouth Colony, established by the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620. Thirdly, and this is where BJ Harrison comes in, Longfellow composed this as a “narrative poem . . .
